Setting up the firewire drive

• Load Disk Utility.
• Select the firewire drive in the list.
• Click the partition tab and select the number you wish to create.
• Give each one a name (and size if there's to be more than one).
• Click the Options button and select the GUID partition scheme if you're using an Intel based Mac or the Apple Partition Scheme if you're using an older Power PC mac.
• Click the button to partition the drive.

Firewire drive not new?

If your drive has been used before, the procedure is slightly different:

• Load Disk Utility.
• Select the partition in the list.
• Click First Aid and then Repair Disk

If Disk Utility finds errors and reports that they've been repaired, repeat Repair Disk until it reports that no repairs were necessary.
